My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary,

When we talk about building membership, we all recognize that welcoming a new member into a Rotary club is only the beginning of our task. To turn a new club member into a committed Rotarian, much more is necessary – and the first step is helping that new member to get involved.

Every Rotarian in every club should know that he or she is not only needed but relied upon. Every Rotarian should have a job within the club – a role to play. After all, why are we in Rotary? We are here to make a difference. Yes, we enjoy our Rotary service, but that is not enough if we are to make Rotary a priority week after week, year after year. The knowledge that we are having an impact, that we are changing lives – that is what keeps us going, no matter what other demands may compete for our time. And this is why each one of us, however long we have been in Rotary, must always be striving to grow as Rotarians – to find new ways to help others, and to bring about all the positive change we possibly can. For this, more than anything, is what makes our Rotary service worthwhile.

Whether we are new members or old ones, each of us can find ways to become more involved in Rotary service – at the club level, the district level, and beyond. Rotarian Action Groups are a wonderful opportunity to put specific expertise or interests to work, in a way that brings Rotarians from every part of the Rotary world together for a common goal. Whether your passion is water and sanitation issues, or microcredit, or blindness prevention – whether you want to volunteer your dental skills or help organize blood drives – chances are there is a Rotarian Action Group for you. And if not, why not organize one yourself? You can learn more about Rotarian Action Groups at www.rotary.org/actiongroups.

Rotary is and always has been an organization based on its clubs. The purpose of Rotary International is not to direct its clubs, but to connect, inform, and support them. Where and how each club, and each Rotarian, chooses to serve, is ultimately the decision of each one alone. So follow your own ambition and your own vision. Open your eyes to the challenges in our world, and use the strength you have through Rotary to find ways to overcome them. Every one of us has so much potential, and can achieve so much, when we Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment is a three day personal development program aimed at boys and girls, aged 14 to 16 years, who have shown some qualities of decency, courage, persistence, sincerity and application in everyday life, which deserve further development. The aim is to build self confidence in an atmosphere of fellowship.

These young people will be presented with a series of ideas, problems and social experiences which will assist them in forming their own values and moral standards and broaden their horizons culturally, socially and academically.

RYPEN aims for the average student and not for the outstanding few. It is advised that you do not send or go with friends. If the student does not know anyone at the start of the seminar, they leave with 5O new friends when it finishes on Sunday.

Nominees are accommodated in dormitory style rooms and meals are provided in a communal dining room.

The District RYPEN Committee provides the organisation and planning. Rotarians and their wives live-in for the duration of this camp, as counsellors and become camp Mums and Dads etc.

A copy of the proposed topics and activities on the RYPEN programme is enclosed. Please consult your local Secondary Schools and show this to the appropriate teachers and be guided by their nominees. Rypenmans receive suitable instruction, and play an active part in introducing and thanking guest speakers, presenting group reports; assisting the camp tasks as well as being involved in various group sessions. The motto of RYPEN which emerged from the first seminar conducted in 1980 is ” The Cultivation of Youth”.

If you think a young person has qualities worth developing, then he, or she is a suitable candidate for RYPEN.

Our Rules are Simple and are consistent with civilised behaviour. Copies of the rules are provided prior to the seminar and breaches may result in the student being sent home.

1. All Rypennians are subject to the complete authority and direction of the leaders of the seminar
2. Alcohol, cigarettes and mobile phones are not permitted at the seminar
3. Lights out means exactly that, and there is no dormitory visiting after lights out
4. Be thoughtful, positive and co-operative at all times
5. Have a great time!

Theme 2011-2012

As I look forward to the coming year I’m excited. I know that a vision shared will become reality. Our goal over the next two years is called Project NOW – Nurturing our Women. This is to build a residence for women recovering from drug, alcohol and gambling addiction and on completion, the building will become the property of the Salvation Army and will be used by them for their Bridge Program.

We continue to care for the community of Babanga in the Solomon Islands where we have over the past seven years invested over $88,000 in infrastructure supplying classrooms, toilets and fresh drinking water.

These two projects are just the tip of the iceberg. We also continue to support other projects both locally and internationally.

The best part of this is we do it with great fellowship and friendship which makes for a cohesive group working together for the common good of our fellow man.

While we Rotarians work for the betterment of mankind we can’t do it without the help and support of our partners, family and friends and say “Thank you” for your support.

The new RI President Kalyan Banerjee announced his theme “Reach within to Embrace Humanity“.

We need to reach within to release our inner powers and then use it to go forward to embrace humanity.

My saying for the year is “It’s All About the Vision“. If we believe in our vision we can accomplish this huge taskof raising $750,000 over the next two years. I know that with the support of my fellow Rotarians and the community at large our vision for Project NOW and all our other worthwhile causes will become reality.

My father Sonny Davis, a wonderful and dedicated Rotarian, a Paul Harris Fellow abd past member of this club, would be proud to know that I have the opportunity to be President of this amazing club.

With the support of my fellow Rotarians and if we hold the vision, I know… this will be a remarkable year….

It’s All about the Vision
